Measuring roof pitches

Use the Pitch Tool to measure the area and pitch of a roof in an Oblique image (an image taken at an angle).

BEFORE YOU MEASURE: Use the Navigation Camera buttons to find an Oblique image that lets you trace the desired facade from the ground to the eave and from the ground to the peak.

To measure pitch:

  1. Click the Pitch Tool .
  2. Measure the height from the ground to the eave by clicking at the ground, dragging to the eave, and then releasing the mouse button.
  3. Measure the height from the ground to the peak, by clicking at the ground, dragging to the peak, and then releasing the mouse button.
  4. Measure the distance of the ridge-line by clicking where you last released the mouse, dragging along the ridge-line to the opposite end of the roof, and then releasing the mouse button.

The area outline and measurement are shown on the image, and the following measurements appear on the Status Bar:

ABOUT ACCURACY: If you are working with a pixilated image (due to increased magnification), it may be hard to determine exactly where to begin and end your measurements. Also, if you can't see the ground because buildings are very close together, you may need to guess where to begin measuring. In these circumstances, your results may not be as accurate as desired; use this tool to estimate the roof's area.
